The 3rd SoGo Active competition took place at St. Joseph's High School May 21st 2010.
Four schools fielded five teams in what turned out to be a lively and fun atmosphere. Event organizer Milt Ottey noted many of these students had not participated in the program before and were evidently enjoying themselves.
The big surprise of the day was a win from the Monsignor Clair reserve team. Monsignor Clair School had decided to bring along some helpers and supporters to cheer their team; but, never one to miss an opportunity, Milt Ottey suggested these supporters form a team and take part.
An extra track lane was quickly put in place and what was to be a 4 team competition turned into a 5 team event. Milt explained, “We always try to have the extra equipment on hand so we are ready for all eventualities. Today it came in very handy. As much as it’s fun to watch these events, it’s definitely more fun to take part; so, I thought, lets add an extra team”.
This last minute team surprised everyone by winning both the Girls and Boys competitions and claiming first overall with 766 points. St Nicholas School came in second place with 744 points; St Marguerite d’ Youville claimed third with 738; Monsignor Clair fourth with 712 points; and Holy Family fifth with 682 points.
A deeper look at the results showed the points for the field events were spread around, with each school managing at least one win. The reason the Monsignor Clair team was able to pull ahead was their very solid performance on the track. They scored 8 wins out of a possible 12, with a further 2 second place results clearly demonstrating this team was fastest!
Another great SoGo event and the IFTA team is hoping to organize many more for next season. In the meantime, watch out for SoGo activities at GTA summer camps.
